Simon tastes Carn Mor Celebration of the Cask Glen Grant 1994 27 Year Old SSW Exclusive (cask 61724)

It's more than a trifle embarrassing that it's taken me so long to post this review! It's well over a year now since I selected cask 61724 for bottling exclusively for Select Scotch Whisky. Apologies for being a wee bit tardy.

One of the largest challenges with importing amazing bottles of Scotch Whisky is having to be the bearer of bad news when the tiny allocations Australia receives of some of the smaller bottlings doesn't stretch far enough! The best way I could think of to overcome the problem was to simply buy the entire cask.

The lovely team at Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers have bottled a few casks of mature Glen Grant whisky in the past, and frankly it's a style I love and am constantly drawn to. The light and fruity style of Speyside Whisky that Glen Grant is famous for becomes something wonderful when good age adds honeyed notes and the oily texture develops.

Being more than a year since I selected this cask I can't recall how many samples I tasted in selecting this cask, but I do recall being impressed by the liveliness of cask 61724. This liveliness was the 'x-factor' which made it stand out over the others.

The dipping of the cask suggested the out-turn would be 148 bottles (as stated on the label) however the actual number bottled was 145.

No more waffle, let's stick our nose in the glass:

Nose: The nose has bright fruity notes of green apples and white-flesh peaches with touches of cedar (oak), honey and varnish. The grassy and biscuity quality of the malt caries across the other notes nicely.

Palate: The simple note would read "honey over peaches and cream", but there's also the same green apples, cedar, grasses, biscuit and varnish mentioned on the nose. A touch of warming ginger spice. An oiliness coats the tongue well and ensures the finish is medium-long.

Finish: Medium-Long with some grip from the oak tannins, the peach notes remain and battle things out with the ginger spice.

It surely won't be surprising to anyone to know how much I enjoy this whisky. We wouldn't have bottled it otherwise! We think it's a great example of a lively, mature Glen Grant scotch whisky. Slainte!
